This project was completed at a busy tanning studio in Blyth that was undergoing a revamp and needed a flooring solution that not only looked fantastic but could also handle high footfall, tanning oils, and regular cleaning. Design in Details
Day 1: Preparation
For commercial spaces like this, thorough preparation is essential to ensure a flawless, long-lasting result. We dedicated the first day to prepping the floor area to receive the epoxy resin system.
Cleaning & Assessment: We started by clearing the area and degreasing the floor to remove any contaminants such as oils or lotions.
Surface Preparation: Using diamond grinding machinery, we mechanically abraded the existing surface to ensure maximum adhesion for the epoxy layers.
Crack & Joint Repairs: Any imperfections, small cracks or joints were filled with specialist repair compounds to ensure a smooth, consistent base.
Dust Removal: We then vacuumed the surface thoroughly to eliminate dust, which is crucial for proper bonding of the primer.
Day 2: Epoxy Resin Installation
With the surface fully prepared, we moved onto the installation of the flake system, using a mid-grey base with subtle speckled flakes for a contemporary, clean look.
Primer Application: A solvent-free epoxy primer was applied to seal the floor and allow strong adhesion for the layers to follow.
Base & Flake Layer: Once cured, we applied the grey basecoat followed by broadcasting vinyl flakes across the entire floor to provide texture, strength, and design. The flakes not only enhance the aesthetics but also add grip—ideal for this fast-paced commercial environment.
Topcoat Finish: After the flakes had set and any excess was removed, we applied a UV-stable clear epoxy topcoat to seal the floor, protect the design, and ensure long-term durability.
